Mis en place candyland

Mis en place -- it's a french phrase that literally translates "put in place" and is a term used by chefs for having all the little ingredients measured out and in reach before you commence assembly. But I'm sure many of my foodie readers already knew that.

This morning (eh, it's 1:33, so maybe more than just morning) was spent putting 11 gingerbread houses together in anticipation of our class party here at Paige & Graham's house Monday. They are actually gingerbread stables, and the kit came complete with little figurine deer and blue sugar for the pond. I used 3 lbs of royal icing and learned a lot about how to glue the boogers together with increasing success from the start at 9:30 until now. Number eleven looks a lot better than number one, but hopefully when the kids get all the gumdrops and candycanes on them, noone will see a difference. You should see the variety of decoration options they have -- I raided the $1 store for all the sugary delights -- good-n-plenty, dots, candy canes, necco wafers, pretzels, peppermint pillows and more. So I will try to post a picture of their masterpieces with all the adornments Monday.
Al took the kids to the Anadarko children's Christmas party while I knocked out this project. Yeah Dad!

Girl, you are amazing! I can't imagine doing all those! We did ONE last year and I said,..never again. They are not easy and lots of work. Can't wait to see how the kids decorate them though. I'm sure they will have tons of fun.
