Name Game

Several people ask me daily if we have picked out a name for our little girl. The answer, frustrating as it may be, is no. We have some front runners, but there is no slam-dunk winner at this point. I have asked my maternal grandmother for family names, but she hasn't gotten back to me on that point. Maybe I should ask my aunt Cinda for help on that (Bev, can you email me names?)

On Al's side of the family there are some very southern names. I am enjoying reviewing them, but I'm not sure if I can use many. Some of the more unusual ones are: Garland, Hazel, Cephas, Roscoe, Myra, Geneva, Opal, Hilda, Edna, Vertie, and Bertie. Of course, most of those names come with equally twangy middle names like Numa, Esta, Leroy, Elthel, Luella and Irene. Finally there are some I do like in the Mackie (Al's mom's maiden name) family tree. They are:
Bessie (like this because there is one on my mom's side as well)
Mae
Ruby
Willie (best if paired with a short little middle name)
Ollie
Della
Frances
Eva
Faye
Elsie
Sarah

So let me here your thoughts. Fair warning, though, if we land on a name we are not revealing it until she arrives!

Well, Daddy, where are some names from your family tree? Come on, pitch in! (Auntie Norma, are you around to help?)

Sara was your maternal great grandmother's name: Sara Alyne Guines Muirhead. So you could cover both sides of the family with that one. Then on your other grandparents side (Brooks) there's always Valadeen, Foncel and Evelyn.
Just for some more thought!

Ha ha! Those NC names remind me of when I asked my MIL for other German family names, other than Anna Franziska. She mentioned Hildebrand and Gertrude (Trudy?). I think we picked the best one. Although, for a while I was enamored with Ingrid, Marion's middle name. However, she has loathed that name all her life, like in a violent way. At first I was not going to let that deter me, but then Ingrid fell out of favor, too.

Elena is a nice family name, but I always worried it would be mispronounced too much.

Hey I just saw there was an Olive in there

what about Sarah Olive Walker and you could call her Oli

With his monogram spelling RAW, Al is very very sensitive that our children's names do not spell anything. Therefore, SEW SAW and definitely SOW are out.
I am finding this "research" very interesting, esp that Sarah is so popular. Good to know.

Hi Norma. Missed you lately. Funny coincidence, as I was sitting in carpool today I was thinking of the name Lou. I'm really striving for something one-syllable. So thanks for the family connection on that one! Still wide open...
