Refuge

Coatue! We finally made our maiden voyage out to Coatue today. We were out there ALL day, and it was GLORIOUS. Ev even napped in the jeep. We invited Mr. Ken along for truly valued backseat driving as much as fun company. The weather was mid-70s, the sun gleamed on the caribbean blue waters, and we didn't see more than a handful of folks fishing and one mega-athletic-marathon-training dude. Otherwise the beach was ours -- or not, exactly. The beach there is a wildlife refuge, and after deflating your tires, kickin' it into 4WD and paying the fee to drive your jeep on the sand there, and watching out that you don't get stuck along the miles and miles of soft sand, you stake out a spot a safe distance from the sea gulls who nest and breed along the beachy fingers above Nantucket. The Great Point Lighthouse portion of the reserve is closed for the nesting piping plovers. Hitchcock jokes from Mr. Ken made all the dive bombing hillarious, and we loved it. And, yes, even sea gull babies with all their mottled downy fluff are indisputably cute! As we bumped on down the road late afternoon, I couldn't resist irritating Mother Bird, seen here balking at me, with one parting shot.

Yes, the sandy, sleepy feet are adorable. But I also love that P&G hold hands as they walk the beach together. I love that they are such great buddies.
