This little island is being pummeled by wind. A typical spring or fall Nor'easter, so they tell us, only it is occuring at high tide at the summer solstice. All this means a really nasty, relentless pounding. The doors are rattling, the wind is unceasing and we have enjoyed two days of baking projects and snuggles. We did venture out on the beach in pants, three layers and raincoats to survey the churned up fish, horseshoe crabshells, whelk egg cases and other oddities (one blue-green egg, for instance). We shelled peas today; then we counted them. There were 200 peas. I made a nice pasta carbonara with them. We ate strawberry shortcake with hand-whipped cream, local berries and 888 vodka pound cake after putting a puny Ev to bed early. She seems to have a lowgrade fever and was pretty fussy today. She got so mad in the shower she vomited, reminiscent of a 2-yr-old ragin' Paige. But by bedtime she'd chatted with Grandad on the phone, boogied to George Strait, Will Smith and Goo Goo Dolls, and puckered up willingly for goodnight kisses.
