Orchardathon weekend

If last weekend was a marathon, this weekend was definitely the gardening equivalent (okay, maybe a half marathon, with no walking allowed, though)

It all started Saturday around noon, when Graham and I descended upon Wabash Feed Store at the very moment they were setting out the new, pristine batch of fruiting trees. We are suckers for anything fruity. So we did a little more than dipping our toe in when we saw three and four way grafted pears and apples, freestone peaches, nectarines, and more. Did you know that there is such a thing as a jujube tree? We settled on five trees, plus potatoes, 1015 onions and a handful of promising blueberry and blackberry starter vines.

I was like a kid in a candy store. When I got home, Al fed my enthusiasm by digging in -- literally, along the far fence of our new property where we had planned to have apples and/or grapes. It was so fun to see the whole family getting into the action. The sky was perfectly overcast and the temps were in the upper 60s. We had them all planted in a matter of hours, and they all actually ENCOURAGED me to go back for more. Our second trip, with Paige, produced an apricot, two kinds of table grape vines, two peaches, and another three way apple tree. And, of course, lots and lots of mulch, soil, inoculate and --oops, another shovel since the one Al was using succumbed to the pressure!

Today Graham and I went over to Thompson+Hanson for a few more gems: dill and sweet peas to replace those lost in the freeze. Paige planted them while G went to his last lacrosse practice of the winter season.

Here are the, sorry for the pun, fruits of our labor. It looks sparse, but it portends yummy abundance!

Today would have been a good day to drive the DB9. It was such a pleasant sunny day.

Can't wait for tomatoes.

It was a great weekend for gardening. Last weekend we planted two gorgeous mexican oaks but I can't wait to plant a lemon and orange tree in a few weeks.
