One Year Ago Today

One year ago today, we became a family of five.
Since that time, I have watched with amazement how easily each of us has fallen in love with our baby girl.
Evelyn Bea, you had us from the start with your determined little fist held high, your strong neck, your gorgeous, perfect body. Personality? You have it in spades. The funny face you make gets us every time. The way you sit in the midst of just about everything Paige and Graham do, from their imaginative play to storytime; you just so naturally fit right in. The way you page through books as though you know what you are doing. The way you have been able to drink from an open glass for months now, and just these last few weeks telling us "dis dis!" with fervent pointing gives us an unmistakable clue what you want. When you love on a babydoll you do it with such gusto, saying "oooh! ooooh!" with a squeeze and sweet pats on the baby's back in your full embrace. "Dit doo" you chime for thank you. You don't leave any doubt when something is unwanted. You just quickly turn your head to the side and block it with your hand.

"Nana" is the one you cry for when she leaves the room now. "DanDad" would quite possibly lasso the moon for you. Graham spends most days kissing you gently all over and calming you down with phrases like "It's okay, BOo Boo, there's nothing to worry about." Paige is very good at knowing what's going on with you, and she helps me all day long. Daddy didn't know it was possible to love another one so dearly, but you get him with your spunk and your gazing up directly into his eyes, you charmed your way right on into the Saturday Morning Errands Gang.
Your "Mom" or "Mommmeee" as you call me is blown away, my sweets. How did you know to skip "mama" and call me those things? As I took your carseat cover off today to ready it for a friend I realized -- you never spit up! You are a champion breastfeeder, you already have a big sense of humor, you love food, you have the perfect buns that we call the "dinner roll". I can't get enough of you even though we've never been apart more than a few hours for 366 post-womb days.

Happy happy first birthday, little junebug.

What a beautiful post, Steph.
Happy birthday, Evelyn. You are very loved by your Auntie Emily, too, who thought of your sweet face and spirit all day, even though I couldn't be there to celebrate with you.
